One of the first major purchases you have to make are planing forms, I have posted a lot about it but there is an aspect many forget to consider. Most forms are 3/4" X 3/4", one side for thick sections, the other for tips. When you consider the groove that is machined (CNC grooves are the way to go, if you want accurate sections, buy accurate forms cut in a CNC mill, it's that simple) and the fact that the screw also takes up space, the max you can plane is about .170". What happens on thick sections is the apex hits the screws and stands proud of the form. For trout rods this is not an issue but the trend toward two handed rods makes taller forms 1 1/4" a more versatile choice. So if are considering building two handed rods or just want the versatility, consider forms that are 1 1/4" tall, you won't regret it.
