If you are new to building it is easy to get overwhelmed at all the stuff you need to get started so here it is. Get a decent plane with a decent blade, two stones to keep them sharp, a set of good planing forms and a few hand tools like files, splitting knife and a simple vise. This is all you need.
There are people out there that will help you glue up a rod, you can flame instead of building an oven but you need planing forms. Cheap forms are around 400 and good forms are 700-800 dollars. It is hard to buy used ones that are not really beat up but you can try.
My advice is to buy the best forms that are in your budget, I am also a fan of buying the more expensive ones. I know it is a big hit but they make a difference. Here is the big benefit, not only do they make great strips but if you have a change of heart you can sell them easily for 80% of the original cost so where is the risk?
Buy your tools slowly, buy only what you need and wait until you have the funds to buy more tools. Buy good stuff, in the end it saves you money and heartache. So get the Maurer book, get good forms then start splitting and filing and planing, don't worry about the rest.
